“Black Widow” star Scarlett Johansson, alongside major studios like Netflix and Amazon, has publicly criticized an organization for gender and racial discrimination, calling for a strong industry-wide boycott.
Following a wave of criticism aimed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), several major studios have united in boycotting the organization due to its inappropriate questions and comments directed at actors. Most recently, actress Scarlett Johansson has publicly called for a boycott of the HFPA, citing her own experiences of being “harassed” by the group.

The HFPA, an organization of journalists representing publications outside the U.S., is best known for founding the Golden Globe Awards. According to Variety, Scarlett Johansson revealed that she has repeatedly avoided HFPA press conferences due to “numerous sexist questions and remarks.” Furthermore, the actress argued that Hollywood’s film industry should boycott the HFPA until significant reforms are made within the organization.

The HFPA is renowned for establishing the Golden Globe Awards
“As an actor promoting a film, we’re expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences and major award shows. In the past, this often meant facing highly sexist questions and remarks from HFPA members, sometimes bordering on sexual harassment. This is exactly why, for many years, I’ve refused to participate in their conferences,” Johansson stated. “Unless there is necessary reform within this organization, I believe it’s time we take a stand against the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity across the entire film industry.”
Prior to Johansson’s statement, the wave of criticism against the HFPA was ignited by Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who announced that the streaming giant would refuse to participate in any HFPA events until reforms are implemented. Amazon Studios and other organizations echoed this sentiment, demanding changes from the HFPA to protect the integrity and safety of their actors.

Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming film Black Widow
Currently, Disney, the largest studio involved, has remained silent on the issue, while Scarlett Johansson’s blockbuster Black Widow is set to premiere in July.
Earlier this year, the HFPA faced backlash following a Los Angeles Times investigation that revealed the organization had no Black members on its board for the past two decades. The report also disclosed that HFPA members received substantial payments and were invited on lavish trips. In April, the HFPA faced further criticism after its president, Phil Berk, sent an email to members describing the Black Lives Matter movement as driven by “hatred.” Berk was subsequently expelled from the organization.

In the past, the HFPA has also faced accusations of accepting “lobbying money” to secure nominations and awards for certain artists. In 1981, actress Pia Zadora won a Golden Globe after her husband treated HFPA members to a luxurious casino trip via private jet, leading to widespread criticism of the organization.
