The pop star has been romantically linked to French filmmaker Romain Gavras since early 2023
Dua Lipa might not be single now, but she’s learned a lot from spending time without a relationship.
In a new interview with the Audacy’s Check In podcast, the pop star spoke about how her new song “Houdini” was inspired by “the fun parts” of being single — presumably before she was first romantically linked to French filmmaker Romain Gavras in February 2023.
“You’re discovering yourself, you’re figuring out what you like, what you don’t like, what you deserve, what serves you and doesn’t in certain instances,” said Lipa, 28, of how her past single status influenced the song, as well as “learning to read red flags and just being like, ‘OK, this actually isn’t for me,’ and then choosing when to stay and when to ‘Houdini,’ essentially, in all those situations.”
“Houdini,” which was released last week, is an upbeat pop song featuring lyrics comparing exiting a relationship to the magician Harry Houdini’s famous disappearing tricks. “I come and I go / Tell me all the ways you need me / I’m not here for long / Catch me or I go Houdini,” she sings on the track.
Lipa also opened up in the interview about what she took away from being single. “You get to learn so much about yourself,” she said.
“A lot of people wish their singledom away looking for someone else, but I think the whole point of spending that time alone is to really figure out what you need, and who you are in the silence and who you are without someone,” continued the Grammy winner. “That’s the best bit, and then, of course, just enjoying your girl time or whatever it is.”

After they were first spotted leaving a BAFTAs afterparty in London together in February, Gavras and Lipa went public with their romance at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2023, walking the red carpet alongside one another.
The couple was most recently seen exiting the Chiltern Firehouse restaurant in London with Lipa’s younger brother Gjin earlier this month.
