Dua Lipa took to the stage at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday wearing a Versace gown remarkably similar to ‘that dress’ worn by Liz Hurley in 1994.
The British singer, who scooped wins for best new artist and best dance recording, opted for a bold black and white Versace gown with cutaways and safety pin detailing to perform at the event.
The dress was Dua Lipa’s second Versace look of the night; the silver sequinned gown with flowing train that she had arrived at the event wearing was also Versace.
While Lipa’s initial silvery look, which she accessorised with Bulgari jewellery and crystal-encrusted nails, was the epitome of red carpet elegance, it was her safety pin-heavy second look that really stole the show.
In fact, the Internet was set alight with comparisons between Lipa’s Versace gown and the black one Hurley rocked back in 1994 to attend the premiere of ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant’s film Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Hurley’s revealing dress, which was held together with several large gold safety pins, made headlines around the world and, in 2008, British department store Debenhams even heralded it the “greatest” red carpet dress of all time following a poll held among customers.
While accepting her award for Best New Artist, first-time Grammy winner Lipa took a swipe at the Recording Academy president Neil Portnow and his declaration at least year’s show that women ‘need to step up.’
His comments, an explanation for the lack of female nominees and winners at previous shows, were poorly received by audiences and musicians.
‘Where I want to begin is by saying how honoured I am to be nominated alongside so many incredible female artists this years,’ she said. ‘I guess this year we’ve really stepped up.’
