Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rock Among Cancelled NBC Shows As His Bad Luck Streak Continues

NBC has made decisions on some of their on-the-bubble shows, canceling two sitcoms, including the Dwayne Johnson-produced and narrated Young Rock

NBC has canceled two of its newer sitcoms, including the Dwayne Johnson-produced Young Rock. In addition to having Johnson on board as executive producer and co-creator, Johnson also narrated the show and made cameo appearances as the future version of himself, running for president in 2032. However, the show largely revolved around Johnson at age 10 to 14 (Adrian Groulx), 15 to 17 (Bradley Constant), and 18 to 26 (Uli Latukefu).

Per The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has made decisions on some of its on-the-bubble shows, canceling the sitcoms Grand Crew after season 2 and Young Rock after season 3. This decision could potentially be driven by the fact that the AMPTP has not yet negotiated a deal with the WGA, necessitating the continuation of the writers strike and indefinitely delaying scripted programming. Young Rock did, however, experience a major dip in ratings during season 3, continuing a tough streak for Johnson that includes the lukewarm box office performance of 2022’s Black Adam.

This streak of canceled or underwhelming projects, including the now-abandoned Black Adam 2, might be tough for Johnson, though the former wrestler’s career has been full of ups and downs over the year. The star has many projects in various stages of development, at least a few of which have the potential to resurrect his reputation as a major draw for wide audiences.

The next project that will feature Johnson is the holiday action-comedy Red One, which comes out later this year. A reimagination of holiday mythology starring J. K. Simmons as a muscular Santa Claus, the movie also stars Chris Evans, Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Liu. It remains to be seen if that movie will strike gold, especially considering it’s Evans’ first blockbuster tentpole since Pixar’s Lightyear flopped last summer.

While Young Rock may not be the end of the streak just yet, Johnson has two major projects that could just put him back on track. He will be producing and starring in the upcoming Moana live-action remake, reprising his original animated role as the demigod Maui, as well as doing the same for a new Fast and Furious spinoff movie, a surprising return after years of feuding with producer/star Vin Diesel. Considering the fact that Disney live-action movies continue to be a huge box office draw, it could be the one to put him back on top.
